About Ackers Point, Sooty Shearwater and Blue Penguin

Trip Details

About Kiwi and other Wildlife

We are fortunate in Stewart Island in that we do not have one of the key predators - the stoat. Therefore, birdlife is relatively abundant in the village area. Kiwi live close to the Oban Village and there are some great opportunities to seek them out on this evening kiwi spotting tour. Bird calls in the night are fun to listen to including the sound of morepork along with their silent flight and occasional raucous calls of the kaka parrot.

Little blue penguins and kiwi is can be sighted in the hours of dark. Generally we focus on kiwi as we cannot be in two places at once.

Little blue penguins do not come up in large numbers in any location near the village.
