What we do - See also main Map.

We meet at Watercress Beach for a short briefing, before heading west along Paterson Inlet's bush clad shoreline, exploring the hidden bays of Kaipipi and onto Millars Beach.

Enjoy the peaceful surrounding, songs of native birds and the sound of the sea, whilst you gaze through crystal clear waters at the superb marine life including, blue cod, trumpeter, starfish, jellyfish, mussels and intricate seaweed. Watch seabirds in the water or along the shore including penguins, cormorants and oystercatchers. You may hear/see kaka (native parrot) calling their liquid honey notes, interspersed with the bellbird's exquisite notes and the wonderfully varied calls of the tui. Loose yourself in the magic of the place!

We stop for lunch overlooking Millars Beach. Then walk a short 15 minutes to the site of the old whaling base through native forest with tall rimu's, tree ferns and delicate ground ferns.

Between 1923 and 1933 the Ross Sea Whaling Company of Sandefjord, Norway, made 9 expeditions to the Ross Sea in Antarctica. In 1925, the Norwegians established a shipyard along Prices Peninsula in Paterson Inlet as an over-wintering and repair base. Explore relics of this era and take time to read the interpretation panels.

Continue on by kayak to explore the sheltered waters of Prices Inlet down to Kidney Fern Arm before returning to Watercress Beach.
