Asking us as locals to tell you what the weather is going to do often leaves us perplexed - we take the weather as it comes. Weather forecasts often do not materialise, but we cannot ignore them in case they are right. Most of us will wait and see what actually happens.

Visitors quite rightly will want to enjoy the Island in good weather. However, we live in the roaring forties and have very changeable, oceanic weather, sometimes experiencing four seasons in one day. Each year's weather is different from the previous year's, making predictions extremely difficult.

Always wear or bring suitable clothing (warm layers, warm hat and gloves) and a waterproof raincoat to Stewart Island. Never take the weather for granted.

The average temperature is approx. 15 - 18 degrees celcius in the summer and approx. 7 - 11 degrees celcius in winter. However, temperatures do rise above and occasionally drop below this mean. Our temperature is often a few degrees warmer than Invercargill, the capital of Southland, because of the warming effect of the surrounding seas.

The average yearly rainfall is 1600 mm - 1800 mm (approx. 60 - 70 inches) in Oban Village but higher further west and south. The rainfall in the Oban Village area is less than the average rainfall in the South Island's West Coast which is over 3000 mm. It does not rain every day, and it rarely rains all day.

Our Island is exhilarating during stormy days and utterly beautiful and highly memorable during calm, sunny days...

Whatever the weather, Stewart Island is an experience not to be missed!
